Description:
This interior renovation converted an underutilized space into a
multi-functional media and gathering space for students, teachers and
community members at an urban high school.
Working with an Arts-at-Large grant for construction costs, Riverside
University High School approached GLOthink to develop concepts for the
2,000 SF Larry Leonard Commons adjacent to the gym on the main floor.
GLOthink met with students, faculty and administrators to brainstorm
ideas, further fleshing out concepts in a series design charettes. The
renewed Commons replaces vending machines with a refreshment bar,
flat-screen TV monitors and projectors controlled from an adjacent media
room, flexible modular plywood furniture, multi-use wall fabric for
pin-ups, splashes of orange and green colors along walls and ceiling,
and patterned carpeting contrasting with existing terrazzo floors to
define spaces.
The team further negotiated with vendors to secure the best price for
products and services. Now various clubs and organizations gather
regularly in the Commons for educational and recreational activities,
making this the true heart of the school.
